US and South Korea reduce annual military drills
The United States and South Korea shortened the Ulchi Freedom Shield exercise from 11 days to five and scaled back field training at President Trump's direction. South Korean President Lee Jae Myung had favoured stronger domestic defence, but the abrupt US decision also caused unease, according to three outlets.
Why it matters
The reduction may advance Seoul's autonomy while creating uncertainty about US commitment and readiness on the peninsula.
