US regulators investigate Tesla Cybercab launch
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an investigation after Tesla put its first production Cybercabs on Austin roads. Regulators are examining whether the self-driving taxi, which has neither a steering wheel nor pedals, meets federal vehicle-safety rules and reviewing the process and data Tesla used to certify it.
Why it matters
The inquiry tests whether a purpose-built autonomous vehicle can satisfy rules written for conventional cars.
