Syrian court sentences Assad to death in absentia for war crimes
A Syrian court sentenced former president Bashar al-Assad to death in absentia, convicting him of war crimes and crimes against humanity committed during the country's 14-year civil war, in which the Guardian said about 500,000 people died. Crowds gathered in celebration in Idlib, a stronghold of the uprising. Assad fled to Russia after being overthrown.
